desert

We hit the road in 1.5 seconds and did not look back. 4 hours later and we had left them in our dust. Red men and the dry earth awaited us. We would be okay. Every day there would be bread to eat and every night songs to sing. And when we got tired we would simply flip the 'shut down' switch. At 30 my tears were all used up and my dreams save but one had been distorted beyond recognition. A shiver ran down my spine as I all at once realized my fate. I saw my forked tongue and scaly arms, felt the dirt beneath my belly and saw the sky so far above and away. I was the centuries-old desert monster, last of his species, nowhere to go but straight in a never-ending line along the horizon.
